Everyone remembers "Lucky Lindy" but not everyone remembers his little pal "Unlucky Larry." Larry was supposed to have accompanied the Lone Eagle on his trans-Atlantic flight. But the reasons for his being left off this particular page of history differ. Lindbergh claimed that Larry had forgotten his food supplies for the flight and when he went back to pick up his cheese sandwiches and a thermos of beef broth, the winds suddenly became so favorable that Lindy took to the air. Larry's account differs in several important ways. He claimed, in his poorly reviewed slim volume, Lone, Schmone, that Lindbergh deliberately left him behind, because Larry was unwilling to kick in for gasoline. Though he claims to have "always looked up to Lindy in spite of missing the boat with the airplane."
